Massage for Sciatica: What Helps and What to Avoid

Sciatica is nerve pain that runs from the lower back, through the buttock and down the back of the leg. It flares up when the sciatic nerve is irritated, often by a disc or a tight muscle pressing against it. Massage cannot fix the underlying cause, but it can release the muscle tension that makes the pain worse.

How massage helps

Work focused on the lower back, glutes and the back of the leg can ease the muscles that squeeze the nerve. This often reduces pain and restores easier movement. Many people combine massage with the gentle stretches a physio or GP has recommended.

What to avoid

Skip deep, forceful work directly on a very painful spot, and tell your therapist about the sciatica before you start. If you have numbness, weakness in the leg, or loss of bladder or bowel control, see a doctor straight away β€” those are red flags, not something to massage.

Choosing a therapist

Look for a remedial or sports therapist experienced with nerve pain, or ask your physio whether massage therapy suits your case. A short, targeted session is usually a better start than a long full-body treatment. You can also read our guide to massage for lower back pain.
